In Caracas, he held residencies at iconic venues such as Goal, Riskos Café, and Prive Sensorial Bar, and was part of the prestigious DJ Service team led by DJ and CEO Oscar Leal. He pioneered the Riskos Beach concept and was resident at Bora Bora Higuerote, setting trends in Venezuela’s beach scene. He also performed during the televised opening of the Pepsi Music Awards with his track “Feel You”, and in 2017, presented a category alongside Auri Castillo and Gonzalo Córdova. Since 2016, he has been a jury member and active participant of the Pepsi Music Academy, promoting electronic music within the Venezuelan industry. Por RICARDO DURÁN Hoy en día, la figura del DJ ha dejado de ser el accesorio de la fiesta para convertirse en el curador de una experiencia humana. En un ecosistema saturado por algoritmos que deciden qué debemos escuchar, el DJ se erige como el último bastión del criterio orgánico. Se necesita de alguien que entienda que el entretenimiento moderno no se trata solo de decibeles, sino de la capacidad para interpretar el pulso de una sociedad que busca autenticidad. En ese escenario, donde la tecnología trata de suplantar al alma, surge la figura de aquel que no solo pone música, sino que construye un refugio emocional para quienes le rodean. Marco Detroit pertenece a esa estirpe de artistas que entienden que el tiempo no es un enemigo, sino una herramienta de refinamiento. Con casi tres décadas de oficio a sus espaldas, su historia está basada en el rigor técnico y en una sensibilidad que solo se adquiere tras miles de horas en tarima. “Siempre digo que, de alguna manera, soy DJ desde que nací. Aunque profesionalmente uno le pone una fecha al inicio de su carrera, en mi casa la música siempre estuvo presente. Crecí rodeado de discos, audífonos y equipos de sonido, ya que mi padre también era disc jockey”, recuerda. Sus primeros recuerdos como DJ vienen desde que estaba muy pequeño. Jugaba con los equipos de su padre mientras la gente bailaba en las fiestas que se organizaban en el edificio donde vivía su familia, “pero lo hacía con tanta seguridad que parecía que sabía exactamente lo que estaba haciendo. Eso, de alguna manera, me daba cierta ‘autoridad’ musical”. Más adelante, su padre le dio una gran oportunidad cuando lo dejó a cargo de la música en un club donde trabajaba. En ese momento se enfrentó a la realidad del oficio: “Tenía que musicalizar durante más de 12 horas los sábados y domingos para un público latino, y fue en ese proceso donde aprendí muchas veces a través de errores, cómo leer la pista, qué funcionaba y qué no, y cómo mezclar distintos géneros para mantener a la gente conectada con la música”. Para dimensionar el peso de su trayectoria, hay que remontarse a hitos que hoy parecen muy lejanos. En 2012, Detroit formó parte de un ritual masivo en la Base Aérea La Carlota de Caracas. Frente a más de 217,000 almas y compartiendo cartel con leyendas de la talla de Rubén Blades y Gustavo Dudamel, el DJ venezolano comprendió que la música es, ante todo, un fenómeno de cohesión social. Aquella tarde no fue una sesión más; fue la validación de que un DJ de música electrónica podía dialogar con la salsa y la academia. A lo largo de su carrera ha compartido escenarios con artistas como Calle 13, Rubén Blades, Willie Colón, Los Ángeles Azules, Los Amigos Invisibles o Ricardo Arjona, entre muchos otros. Esa capacidad para gestionar la energía de las masas se ha transformado, años después y ya instalado en el epicentro de Miami, en una muestra de gran madurez, dinamismo y sofisticación. Esa versatilidad le ha permitido moverse entre el mundo de la moda, las grandes marcas, y los entornos de la diplomacia regional. “Antes de un show procuro prepararme tanto física como mentalmente, porque ser DJ durante varias horas requiere más energía y concentración de lo que muchas personas imaginan”, dice, haciendo evidente que en su camino el profesionalismo está por encima de todo. “La parte mental también es clave. Me gusta visualizar cómo quiero desarrollar el show, pensar en el contexto del evento, el tipo de público y la narrativa musical que quiero construir”. A diferencia de la narrativa común del DJ autodidacta y noctámbulo, él ha apostado por la formalización de su arte. Miembro de la Audio Engineering Society (AES) y de la Academia Latina de la Grabación (Latin Grammys) desde 2018, su enfoque es el de un ingeniero que muestra profundo respeto por las audiencias, por sus colegas, y por la propiedad intelectual, un valor fundamental para quien entiende que la industria musical es un ecosistema que debe ser protegido y profesionalizado. Ese enfoque le ha llevado a desarrollar e implementar programas en los que guía a las nuevas generaciones para que entiendan que ser DJ no es solo apretar un par de botones, sino entender la historia del ritmo, la física del sonido y la responsabilidad de tener la visibilidad que proporciona un escenario, un micrófono, o un fader. Marco Detroit no es solo un sobreviviente de la industria; es un renovador. En una ciudad como Miami, que devora tendencias con la misma velocidad con la que las crea, su vigencia es el testimonio de que la pasión cimentada en el conocimiento siempre encontrará un lugar. “He entendido que un DJ no solo mezcla canciones, sino que cuenta una historia en cada presentación.
